Raena answers your “Frequently Asked Questions”…
Which class is right for me?
No previous bellydance is needed for Level 1 classes, which are beginner-friendly. Raena always offers modifications to decrease OR increase the difficulty. Power Hour Technique is great for brand new students or those who don’t want to keep track of choreography.
Level 2 is for intermediate + level dancers who have studied with me for @ a year. If you are interested in the advanced class experience, please reach out to discuss possibilities.
What do I need for a bellydance class?
Mostly, you need a curious, open-minded attitude! Bellydance is amazing but it is also challenging. The brain & body are developing a whole, new skill set. I encourage new students to be patient as it can take about three months before you start to feel more coordinated and confident. This is really hard for perfectionists but it’s so worth it.
Otherwise, wear comfortable yoga-type clothes. You can be barefooted, socked, or wear non-grippy footwear. I offer loaner hip scarves in each class. Some classes will need a prop, like a veil or wings but that will be communicated at registration so you have time to prepare.
What if I have to miss a class due to vacation, illness, or work?
While I don’t offer individual make-ups, you won’t miss out! My in-studio classes are also “live” on ZOOM (for remote needs) & recorded in the process. Each week, I share these recordings with the registered students (via email and WhatsApp) to catch-up or use for extra practice. There is also the option to book private sessions to enjoy the benefits of personalized instruction.
If you will regularly miss in-studio classes, you may prefer my Power Hour Technique class since it can be done as “drop-in” when it works for you.
Are classes for females ONLY?
I believe everyone should enjoy dance and I strive to be inclusive. While the majority of students are women, men and non-binary individuals are welcome to participate in my classes. Please contact me to talk about how McKinney Bellydance can be a safe place for your dance experience.
What ages do you teach?
My weekly classes are for adults (18yrs+). I do welcome mature teens (13+) IF their adult is participating in the class.
For 13 yr and younger, I'm happy to teach customized workshops for homeschool groups, church groups, clubs, GSA Scout events (there is even a badge), and birthday parties.
Do you have babysitting? Can my child come and wait?
No & No. My classes are held in a single room studio and it’s limited in spaces/no seating. I really do appreciate this limitation (been there!) and suggest you join my classes via the ZOOM, as a compromise.
Do I HAVE to perform? OR.... When do I GET to perform?!
No one is ever expected to perform but I do offer opportunities. The DFW area has periodic events called “haflas” which are a fun, low-stress events hosted for & attended by dancers. Whenever possible, I will invite students to join in an upcoming student piece. These shows are a great way to debut your new skills in a supportive setting. Students usually dance one of the my class choreographies but you can also dance solo or collaborate with classmates on a personal dance projects (please communicate such additional plans ahead of time).
How long before I'm not a “beginner”?
First, we are all beginners at some point! On average, most dancers are considered "beginner" for the first few years of consistent weekly classes. Of course, your progress depends on how many classes you attend PLUS your at-home practice time, workshop events, and private lessons.
Keep in mind, that dancers experienced in one dance format will be a beginner in bellydance. That’s OK! It’s like learning a new language.
You will notice there is a lot of review and repetition in bellydance classes - this is to improve muscle memory so your movements become second nature. The ultimate goal of bellydance is to express yourself without “think face” and dance WITH the music. Even seasoned professionals regularly practice basic drills to fix or prevent bad habits and maintain their foundational skills so they relax into the music!
